The Michelin Guide's review
Originally a wooden Norman fort built in 1172, it was turned into a defensive castle with four corner towers in 1192, before becoming a splendid palace in the Victorian era. During your visit, you will see lovely hand-painted Chinese-style tapestries and an impressive portrait collection in the great gallery. You should then head to Butler Gallery in the basement, which exhibits work by contemporary Irish artists and to the old Victorian kitchens, now a delightful tea room.
