The Michelin Guide's review
This castle with an interior courtyard, Scotland's northernmost fortress, was, along with Bothwell and Dirleton, one of the most important castles in the 13C. Its defences were unusual, as they combined a keep (of French design) with a guardroom (of English design). Today only the foundations remain, but it is nonetheless easy to imagine the layout of the complex.
