Lake Tanganyika is the second largest freshwater lake in the world and the second longest after Lake Baikal in Russia. This gem and its outstanding ecosystem can be explored from Kigoma. However, be mindful that human activity on the banks is a threat to its balance. For security reasons tourists are officially advised against all travel to the region, with the exception of the town of Kigoma, Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park.
