Qasr el-Ghoueita
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
For safety reasons, tourists are strongly advised to avoid this region. Built by Darius and embellished under the Ptolemies, this little temple hidden behind imposing walls overlooks the desert and oasis. The site is remarkable, exuding a profound serenity and affording absolutely magnificent panoramic views. Dedicated to the Theban Triad (Amun, Mut and Khonsu), the temple has retained its hypostyle hall, some fine columns and handsome reliefs. On the hill in the distance stand the ruins of the Roman temple of Qasr ez-Zayan, although they are much less spectacular.
