The Michelin Guide's review
Hidden away in the undergrowth of a remote, high-altitude location, this site is thought to have been both the sacred city of the Thracians, where the mythical Orpheus and Alexander the Great still cast their shadows, and a temple dedicated to the Cult of Dionysus. It is worth first of all getting an idea of how the site is laid out: a large stairway hewn out of the rock climbs to the royal palace, dominated by the Acropolis. A path leads onward to the remains of the little palace.
