Hikiyama Float Exhibition Hall
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This exhibition hall showcases the 14 floats that take part in the Kunchi Festival organized every autumn by the neighbouring Shinto shrine. These giant lacquered floats are made out of wood, clay, hemp and paper and weigh between 2 and 5 tons. Since 1819, the floats in the shape of Samurai helmets, lions, dragons and fish are pulled through the streets of Karatsu by nowadays 14 teams corresponding to the former 14 trading districts of the town.
