The Michelin Guide's review
Past rulers harnessed the power of the Mahaweli in Peradeniya. In the early 19C, the British transformed the former royal gardens into botanical gardens, today the largest of the island and home to over 4,000 species. Dozens and dozens of acres provide shelter to splendid indigenous specimens: palm trees, spice trees, orchids and tropical plants.
