Hokoku-ji
The Green Guide
The Michelin Guide's review
This Zen temple belongs to the Kencho-ji temple of the Rinzai school. It was founded in 1344 by Tengan Eko (1273-1335) in tribute to Ashikaga Ietoki, grand-father of Ashikaga Takauji. In addition to some lovely 14C Buddha sculptures, the temple's appeal resides in its forest of 2,000 moso bamboos, the giant variety of this woody plant. Take the time to sample a matcha tea in the next-door pavilion.
