The Michelin Guide's review
At the edge of the Pindus Mountains and the Plain of Thessaly, a group of sandstone pillars stands out against a backdrop of green, like a "forest of rocks", forming fantastical shapes, with smooth, vertiginous faces. Since the 11C, the famous and aptly named Meteora (meaning "suspended in the air") have been perched atop these huge rocks. This extraordinary natural phenomenon is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and draws many visitors.
