The Michelin Guide's review
Around 1 500 brown bears inhabit the dense forest, mountains and rocky beaches of this wild island covering 4 400km2. The bears feed on salmon from streams and wild berries from the high meadows. The presence of so many well-fed bears led early dwellers to dub the place Kootznoowoo ("fortress of bears"). Visitors with a permit may visit Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area on the northeast shore.
