The Michelin Guide's review
This granite and gneiss mountain has been shaken to its core by geological movements, which have given it a somewhat tattered look. The terrain and the rather harsh climate make it a great spot for rock climbing and cross-country skiing, with devotees able to indulge their passion in a beautifully preserved setting. Follow the N 102 from Vals-les-Bains in the direction of Puy-en-Velay. En route you will have the opportunity to admire the perfectly vertical columnar basalts, with their striking blue-grey colour, and some very fine panoramic views (notably at the Col de Meyrand).
