The Michelin Guide's review
The elegant Neoclassical façade, crowned with a bell tower (1707), is an emblem of colonial authority and occupies the entire southern side of the square. On the ground-floor, note the carved stone reproductions, but it is the high ceilings and lavish period furniture upstairs that really steal the show. Don't miss the unusual 17C Portuguese cannon, Si Jagur in the rear courtyard: the hand at the end is making a sexual-looking gesture that can be interpreted here as a sign of fertility.
