In 1876, in order to welcome the Prince of Wales in a dignified manner, Maharaja Ram Singh II had Jaipur painted pink. It has retained its pink colour to this day. The historic heart and nerve centre of Jaipur, the Pink City is organised according to plans that have remained intact since the 18C. Venture behind the crenellated ramparts to explore the City Palace complex, stroll about the colourful bazaars and visit in the early morning for the colours, and (relative!) calm.
