The Michelin Guide's review
A short distance from Jaipur, Amber Fort stands imperiously above the small Maota Sagar Lake. Amber was once the capital of Jaipur state. In the late 16C, Man Singh I built his palace-fort here, which was extended and embellished by Jai Singh II in the 17C. The fort reveals a succession of courtyards, palaces (Jai Mandir, Jas Mahal) and pavilions (Diwan-i Am), mingling Mughal and Rajput styles, which are surrounded by refreshing gardens (Dilaram Bagh). The fort is a UNESCO world heritage site.
