The Michelin Guide's review
This bridge, rebuilt in 1953 and an exact replica of the 1673 bridge destroyed by a typhoon, straddles the formidable Nishiki River and its devastating floods. It used to lead to the samurai quarter and, as such, was forbidden to mere mortals, who had to cross the river by boat. Kintai Bridge is a puzzle of wooden pieces assembled without a single nail, 193m long, 5m wide, and with five humps standing on stone pillars. You cross it on foot to reach the historic quarter.
