The Michelin Guide's review
The arsenals of the old Venetian harbour, of which three arches remain, stand to the west of the modern port. Their scale gives an idea of the significance of the activity of the shipyards, of which there were some 20 in the 17C. At the far end of the jetty lined with colourful fishing boats, the form of Koules Fort emerges from the sea. This fine structure, with a lion of Saint Mark, was built by the Venetians between 1523 and 1540 to reinforce the city's defences against the ambitions of Suleiman the Magnificent.
