The Michelin Guide's review
Ferdinand II (1529-95), Governor of Tyrol, converted Ambras Castle into a luxurious Renaissance palace. To house his collections, the Humanist prince had a lower castle built, in which you can admire his Cabinet of Curiosities and Arms Halls. The upper castle is home to the living quarters, a fine portrait gallery and paintings from the Middle Ages. Next door, the lavish Spanish Hall served as a venue for banquets.
