The Michelin Guide's review
Lake Inari is the third largest (1 084km2) in Finland. The surrounding mountains and its 3 318 rocky islands covered with pine and birch are reflected in its dark but pure waters, which don't thaw until mid-June. A Sámi folk song, which says that the lake is as deep as it is long, illustrates the respect the lake commands from the Sámi. The deepest point is actually 92m. Boat trips (June to mid-Sept) leave from Inari for Ukonkivi, an island that was formerly a sacrificial site.
