 Well worth the diversions

  The Michelin Guide's review
Ibusuki is famous for its volcanic sand baths, said to ease headaches, rheumatism and other pains. For three centuries, the Japanese have been flocking here to be buried up to their necks in sand by old ladies armed with spades. The water which springs under the beach infuses the sand with 55°C steam full of marine minerals. The heat and sweating accelerate blood circulation, thereby facilitating the elimination of toxins.
