The Michelin Guide's review
In a narrow street to the rear of the central pool, Chengzhi House (1855) is the finest merchant residence in the region. It was built by Wang Dinggui, who made his fortune in the salt trade. Laid out around nine courtyards, the house consists of consoles, beams and doors that have been painted, decorated with gold leaf and carved with great finesse. On the lintels, the engraved medallions glorify the many lineages. The ends of the pewter gutters are adorned with open-mouthed dragons.
