Hastings Castle is William the Conqueror's first English castle (William had come to England from Normandy). The ruins stand high above the Old Town and seaside resort below. The story of the famous Battle of Hastings (1066), after which William was crowned king of England, is told in an audiovisual presentation, The 1066 Story. Nearby is the Victorian funicular West Hill Cliff Railway.
