The Michelin Guide's review
The westward-flowing Gunnison River has scoured a virtually impenetrable path through Precambrian gneiss and schist to create this spectacular canyon, which is 53mi long, more than 2 700ft deep and no wider than 40ft in places. A road along the south rim offers numerous scenic overlook points. Hikers should check with park rangers before heading off on some of the more demanding trails.
