The Michelin Guide's review
At once an unprecedented social project and a fine industrial enterprise, this town of 2 000 people was built by Jean-Baptiste André Godin (1817-1888), founder of ironworks that manufactured his stoves. The three housing blocks were built from 1859 to 1883 and contained 500 housing units boasting mod cons. Residents also enjoyed complementary facilities: school, theatre, library, bandstand, laundry, pool, garden, sickness and old age insurance and cooperative shops.
