The Michelin Guide's review
This palace was built in the early 15C by the first Duke of Bragança, Afonso Henriques, the natural son of King João I. A strong Burgundian influence is noticeable, especially in the roofs and the unusual appearance of the 39 tall brick chimneys. This was one of the most sumptuous residences on the Iberian Peninsula, but the court moved to Vila Viçosa in the 16C, so from that time onwards it was only occupied intermittently. The interior boasts admirable ceilings and tapestries.
