American presence at the Guantánamo military base dates back to the early 20C. Today, it is known around the world for its detention centre. You will see next to nothing of the naval base, to which access is strictly regulated. Only the lookout Mirador la Gobernadora, 1km after the gate that blocks access to Boquerón, on the left-hand side of the road, offers a view of the region, although the US military facility can barely be made out.
