The Michelin Guide's review
It was in this monastery consisting of 13C buildings and attached to a rocky overhang that St Francis started the tradition of the Nativity crib. The chapel of the crib is decorated with frescoes from the Giotto school. Visitors can also see where the saint once lived, as well as the early church on the upper level which dates back to 1228 and which has preserved its original furnishings.
