The Michelin Guide's review
Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the livestock market was held in this area between the River Mur and the ramparts where the Franziskanerplatz and Neutorgasse meet, not far from the Hauptplatz. The district's unusual name (Kälbernes Viertel or "Calf Quarter"), given to the area by the Styrians, recalls its origins. Visitors can stroll in the Neue-Welt-Gasse or Franziskanergasse and soak up the Mediterranean-like atmosphere of these alleyways, which are crowded with terraces in summer.
