Drive through the villages of Casabois and Le Bélier, then take the Route Forestière 13, the road along the ridge separating Salazie and Mafate. It commands some extraordinary panoramic views - often simultaneously - of the two cirques. Near the Col des Boeufs car park, a viewpoint indicator names all the peaks in sight. From here there is a hiking trail to La Nouvelle, in the Cirque de Mafate, over the pass, Col des Boeufs. This is one of the easiest ways to reach Mafate.
