The Michelin Guide's review
Built in 1492, it was one of the first fortified manor houses to be built as a status symbol. Its 15C gatehouse is flanked by wings of the same period. The rooms are more recent (19C). The Needlework Room features embroideries made by Mary Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick. Letters from Henry VIII, Queen Mary and Elizabeth I, as well as woodcarvings by Grinling Gibons, are displayed in the King's Room. A priest-hole is hidden under the floor of the octagonal chamber next-door.
