The Michelin Guide's review
Dunrobin Castle, the ancestral seat of the earls and dukes of Sutherland, stands sentinel looking out to sea. Additions dating from the 19C and 20C surround the original tower (1400). The main rooms hold a fine collection of paintings (Canaletto et al) and include family portraits (Reynolds, Lawrence). A museum presents mementoes of the Sutherland family, stuffed animals and archaeological finds. From the terrace is a general view of the formal gardens.
