The Michelin Guide's review
Aphrodisias honoured Aphrodite, goddess of "sensual love and exquisite femininity". The site is both magical and worthy of the worship that took place here. It was a centre of medicine and philosophy, as well as a capital of sculpture and art. The white marble used was sourced here, and artists created what was to form the basis of Roman statuary. Its exceptionally well-preserved remains - a theatre, odeon and stadium - bear witness to the grandeur and opulence of the greatest cities from Antiquity. Strolling through the site is a delight, an experience enhanced by the absence of hordes of tourists.
