The Michelin Guide's review
These huge sandstone and limestone bluffs stand 250m/820ft above the North Platte River. From 1838 onwards, waves of wagon convoys followed the Oregon Trail across the plains. Along with Chimney Rock, 40km/25mi further east, these 20-million-year-old bluffs marked part of the journey for more than 350 000 immigrants. Visit the Oregon Trail Museum and follow the Saddle Rock Trail to enjoy panoramic views across the North Platte valley.
