The Michelin Guide's review
Lake Garda (370km²) is bordered by highly varied landscapes: low-lying banks and a plateau to the south, steep slopes to the west and the mountain range of Monte Baldo opposite. The Dolomites to the north shelter the lake creating a mild climate, earning it the nickname of "beneficent" lake from as far back as its inhabitants can remember. Its banks are dotted with smart resorts whose reputations can be traced back to Roman times and the influence of the Venetian Republic can still be seen in its architecture and painting.
