The Michelin Guide's review
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country's major sites devoted to the history of its convicts, this immense prison takes visitors back to the foundations of modern Australia and its forced settlement by the convicts, deported from Great Britain. Between 1855 and 1868, nearly 10,000 such detainees passed through this penitentiary, which they built with their own hands. The prison now offers guided tours as well as a Tunnels Tour, to explore the labyrinth of tunnels dug by the convicts under the prison.
