About 250 million years ago the Great Karoo was covered by vast swampy areas interspersed with great rivers and mountains worn by erosion. Some fossils subsist from that era, from water drainage and animals, such as the Bradysaurus prints that can be seen on the Gansfontein Paleosurface.
