The Michelin Guide's review
More than 50 000 fossils - one of the most extensive collections from the Oligocene period (35 million years ago) - have been removed from the shale bed of ancient Lake Florissant. Included among them are no fewer than 17 000 species of insects. A 24km/15mi nature trail wends its way through sequoia stumps petrified by volcanic mud flows.
