The Michelin Guide's review
Ancient Hybla, settled as of the Bronze Age, was destroyed by the Syracusans, probably c 664 BC. From this period, the site still has over 5 000 tombs hewn out of the cliff, divided between five necropolises. After accommodating Arab, then Norman, populations, the site was completely abandoned until the early 20C, when the archaeologist Paolo Orsi began his research.
