The Michelin Guide's review
A favourite with several generations of Stuarts, this "pleasure palace" is one of the first examples of the Scottish Renaissance style. Restoration work started in the late 19C. The furnished interior is adorned with painted ceilings, in particular the King's bedchamber which was reconstructed in the 19C, and tapestries, including some of 17C Flemish provenance. The gardens are a riot of colour, and the tennis court (1539) is the oldest of the United Kingdom.
