São Francisco Church

Michelin Guide
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
This early 16C church is crowned with castellations and conical spires, some of which are wreathed. Note the Manueline-style portal with a pelican above it, the symbol of Don João II, and King Manuel's armillary sphere. In the chancel at the end of a wide nave with ribbed vaults, there are two tribunes: one Renaissance, the other Baroque. The impressive Capela dos Ossos owes its name to the bones and skulls of 5 000 people that line the walls and pillars.
