The Michelin Guide's review
Wealthy, cultured Roman patricians were drawn to the resort of Herculaneum because of its beautiful setting overlooking the Bay of Naples. Their magnificent houses and evidence of their daily lives have been preserved for eternity following the eruption of Vesuvius which engulfed the town in 79 AD. Today much of Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains buried under the modern town.
