Various walks are possible from the point where the cable car drops you off. It is up to you whether you opt to take a guide, some of which speak English. There are a number of observation points along the walking trails where you can see plants (chinguruma, rhododendron etc.) and animals (brown bears, red squirrels and rodents, such as pikas), and bubbling pools - a reminder, as are the wisps of hot smoke and gases that rise up from the ground here, that the volcano is still very active. You can climb to the top in about 2hrs, depending on weather conditions.
