The Michelin Guide's review
Some argue that Elgin Cathedral (1270) was once the finest in Scotland. Today its majestic beige ruins now stand as a testament to its former beauty, while serving as a reminder that the 13C was a particularly intensive period of church building. Further to acts of destruction perpetrated in 1390 by Alexander Stewart, aka the Wolf of Badenoch, the cathedral continued to deteriorate after the Reformation until it was almost in ruins. Conservation only began in the 19C.
