The Van Abbe museum consists of two buildings, one designed by architect Kropholler in 1936 and the other by Abel Cahen in 2003. The rich collection of paintings and sculpture dates from 1900 to modern times, with a particular focus on the period after 1945. Artistic schools such as cubism, the "De Stijl" movement, expressionism, surrealism, the CoBrA group, pop art and minimalist art are all represented, featuring works by Picasso, Chagall, Mondrian, Permeke, Ernst, F. Bacon and Dubuffet.
