The Michelin Guide's review
A space enclosed with railings marks the site where Captain John Porteous was hanged in 1736. Some hundred Covenanters were also executed here in the late 17C. West Port on the southwest corner is the western approach to the town. Nowadays, many restaurants and pubs line this semi-pedestrianised square. A market is held every Saturday - a chance to browse local food specialities.
