Carlyle was born in this 18C house, built by his father. Two of the rooms have been arranged in the simple style of the 19C with a few objects belonging to the family. In one of the rooms are photos, manuscripts and other documents illustrating the life of the author. Tributes to the author on his 80th birthday in 1875 were signed by the most influential literary figures of the time.
