The Michelin Guide's review
The oldest part of the park (between the lake and the château) was designed by the French architect Nicolas de Pigage in 1769. The first public garden in Germany, the park was extended following plans by Maximilian Weyhe in 1811. Built in the 18C, the château is home to the Goethe Museum, which houses a collection of manuscripts, autographs, drawings and sketches by the writer. On Napoleon hill, don't miss the bronze sculpture Harmony by Maillol, erected as part of a modest monument to Heine.
