The Michelin Guide's review
This Cistercian abbey was founded in 1142 on an isolated strip of fertile land by King David with the agreement of Fergus, Lord of Galloway, his childhood friend. By founding monasteries, David assured peace and prosperity while spreading the Good Word. The monastery was secularised during the Reform and gradually fell into disuse. In 1568, Mary Stuart stopped here during her escape to England.
