The Michelin Guide's review
Augustus the Strong's initial idea was to build an orangery on the site of a fortress. His architect, Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, created this vast esplanade surrounded by galleries and pavilions. This Baroque gem combines sculpture from the atelier of Balthazar Permoser, a Bavarian artist influenced by trips to Italy and architectural work. The building now houses three museums, including the Old Masters Picture Gallery. Enter via the Carillon Pavilion (Sophienstraße) for an optimal overview.
