It is surprising to come across such an imposing building in such a small village. Its construction was funded by a bequest from John McNabb (1732-1802), a local man who made his fortune as a London shipowner. In 1818, William Playfair drew up the plans for this Grecian-style building with a colonnaded portico, pediment and wings standing slightly forward, supported by twin pillars.
