The Michelin Guide's review
Completed in 1886-the second capitol on this site-the Beaux-Arts Iowa State Capitol sparkles on its perch overlooking downtown. While its most recognizable feature is its glittering, 23-carat-gold-covered dome (modeled after Les Invalides in Paris), the structure's interior, which incorporates 29 types of marble, is a truly phenomenal public space. The Grand Staircase is surmounted by stained glass, a gigantic mural depicting pioneers' arrival in Iowa, and six mosaics in arched panels. The stunning law library occupies the entire west wing of the second floor.
